Free Time

British teenagers spend their free time in the same way as Norwegian teenagers. They listen to music all the time. Many young people have mp3 players and CD players. So music is an important part of their life. Many of them also have computers, so they can go on the internet and download music and films. They text their friends about everything, watch TV and play computer games. Some of them also watch or play sports.

The Wild West

The Arrival of Strangers:
Columbus discovered America in 1492. He brought back thing people had never seen before: chocolate, corn and peanuts. People from Europe wanted to go to the New World. In the beginning the settlers from Europe were friends with the Native Americans and they helped each other. But when the Europeans started taking land from them and hunted buffalo, it made life difficult for the Native Americans. As the Europeans went west, they fought hard with the Native Americans over land. They drove the tribes out of the places where they had lived for hundreds of years. The government made reservations for the Native Americans where they had to live. Reservations were areas of poor land where it was difficult to hunt and grow food. Whole tribes of Native Americans were forced to move to the reservations. There were many battles between them and the US soldiers, who forced them to leave their homes. Thousands of Native Americans died.

Ireland

Do you know that Ireland is the third largest island (after Greenland and Great Britain) in Europe? It is often called the Green island. Today Ireand is divided into two countries. In the south is the Republic of Ireland. This is the largest part of the island. The capital is Dublin. In the north-east is Northern Ireland. This is a part of the United Kingdom. The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. For many years there have been gights between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland.

This is England

England is the largest country in the United Kingdom (UK). About 50 million people live there. Most of them live in cities like London and Birmingham. Greater London has a population of nearly eight million. Many people live along the south coast.

The English flag is the St George*s Cross, a red cross on a white background. The flag of the UK is called the Union Jack. Many people think that England in the same as Britain or the UK. That is, of course, wrong. So what is the difference?
